Veterinary education at Jilin University began in 1904 (the 30th year of Guangxu Reign of Qing Dynasty) when the Qing government established the Equine Medicine Hall in Baoding, Hebei Province. It was the first veterinary school in China and also the origin of modern veterinary education in China. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the University of Veterinary Medicine, the University of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, and the University of Military Supplies were transferred to Jilin University in 2004. The former Department of Military Veterinary Medicine was transformed into the College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, and in 2012, it was renamed the College of Veterinary Medicine, Jilin University. At present, the college has 93 full-time teachers, including 58 professors and 29 associate professors, 14 with the title of national talents, 2 "Famous teaching teachers" of Jilin Province, 54 doctoral supervisors, 37 people have been appointed as vice president or above in national society or professional committee, and 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering have been cultivated successively.
The College has one undergraduate major: Animal Medicine, which is one of the first first-class undergraduate major construction points in China. In 2014, the experimental class of Animal Medicine (Top-notch Training Program for Outstanding Agricultural and Forestry Talents) was set up. At present, there are 518 undergraduate students. It has one master's degree authorization and one first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization (including veterinary Doctor degree authorization). Veterinary medicine is the national first-level doctoral degree authorization discipline and postdoctoral research mobile station. Preventive veterinary medicine is the national key discipline, basic veterinary medicine is the national key discipline (cultivation), and "Human-animal Shared medicine" is one of the first "double first-class" independent disciplines. There are 325 postgraduate students and 234 doctoral students in the university. The Animal Science and Technology Experimental Teaching Center of the College is a national experimental teaching demonstration center. It now has the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Asia-Pacific Collaborating Center for Foodborne Parasitic Diseases, the Key Laboratory of Zoonoses of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Animal Embryo Engineering of Jilin Province, the Research and Development Center of Veterinary Medicine of Jilin Province, the Diagnosis and Control Center of Animal Diseases, the Major Collaborative innovation of "Zoonoses" of Jilin Province, the Engineering Center of Translational Biology and Health of Jilin Province, and Jilin Province Forestry Animal Bioengineering Research Center and other 8 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms. In the past 3 years, it has undertaken more than 130 national key research and development programs, national defense science and technology innovation projects, National "973", "863", National Natural Science Foundation projects, China-France Advanced programs and provincial and ministerial scientific research projects.
The School adheres to open education and pays attention to international exchanges. It maintains close academic ties with universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries, such as Japan, the United States, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and New Zealand. It regularly exchanges undergraduate students with Kitasato University in Japan and accepts international students from all over the world. As the origin of modern veterinary education in China, in the new period of historical development, the College will give full play to the advantages and characteristics of disciplines, personnel training, scientific research and teaching staff, strive to make the overall level of disciplines reach the leading level in China, key disciplines reach the advanced level in the world, and become the national training of high-quality innovative talents. It is an important base for high-level scientific and technological research and achievement transformation, accelerating the realization of the grand goal of "creating a leading research-based veterinary medical college in China".
