College of Veterinary Medicine was founded in 1904. Its history can be traced back to Beiyang Hippiatrics School set up by Qing Dynasty. After the foundation of the People's Republic of China, the Veterinary University of the PLA was set up in Changchun. And its name was inscribed by commander in chief, Zhu De, in 1953. Chairman Jiang Zemin renamed the university as the University of Agriculture and Animal Science of PLA in 1992. Then the name was changed into the Quartermaster University of PLA in 1999. In 2004, the university combined with Jilin University, and the original department of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine became College of Animal science and Veterinary Medicine, Jilin University. In 2012, College of Veterinary Medicine was founded. As the cradle of China’s modern veterinary medicine education, the University first recruits undergraduate and graduate students in veterinary medicine in China. Numerous excellent students were educated and graduated from the University. The University has made a tremendous contribution to the education of Veterinary Medicine in China.
The College of Veterinary Medicine has consummate scientific research system and abundant teaching resources. There are four educational units, including department of Basic Veterinary Medicine, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary public health in our college. There are also seven research units, including Animal Function and Morphology Laboratory, Animal Nutrition Metabolism and Toxicopathy Laboratory, Animal Important Pathogeny and Loemia Laboratory, Animal Biotechnology Laboratory, Animal Genetics and Reproduction Engineering Laboratory, Jilin Province Key Laboratory of Animal Embryo Engineering, Jilin Province Center of Veterinary drugs Research and Development etc. In addition, there are three centers, including Diagnosis and Therapy Center of Animal Disease, Animal Reproduction and feed Research and Development Center, Animal Science and Experiment Education Center etc, in our college. There are 88 Faculty members in our college, including 32 Professors, 16 Associate Professors. The 93% of full-time teachers possess Ph. D’s and all of them possess Master Degrees. There are 30 doctoral student mentors and 59 master student mentors in our college with 23 of them holding academic positions above vice-chairman in the national academic association and the professional committee, and 3 of them are Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Currently, more than 100 grants are conducted, including the States Key Program, National Natural Science Foundation, “Project 863” and “Project 973” etc, in our college.
There are two National Key disciplines (Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), two Provincial Key disciplines (Basic Veterinary Medicine, Animal Genetics and Reproduction), two Postdoctoral Research Stations (Veterinary Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), seven disciplines authorized for Doctoral Degree (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Basic Veterinary Medicine, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Human and Animal co-infected Disease, Animal Genetics and Reproduction, Zoology), eleven disciplines authorized for Master Degree (Zoology, Experimental Animals, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Animal Genetics and Reproduction, Animal Nutrition and feeds, Basic Veterinary Medicine, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Human and Animal co-infected Disease, Military Preventive Medicine). The college has three specialties in Animal Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science and Biological Technology, focus on Animal Pharmacy, Pet Medicine, Experimental Animals, Veterinary Medicine of Public Health. Our education courses covers a wide range, including Vocational courses, Undergraduate, Master, Doctor, Professional Degree as well as Adult Education. There are approximately 3000 students in different backgrounds in our college.
Our college has open policy of education and emphasizes on international communication. Our college keeps close academic relations with universities and research units form more than 20 states, includingJapan,United States,France,Germany,Sweden,Denmarkand New Zealand etc. Our college has an agreement with Kitasato University in Japan, and sends visiting scholars and students regularly.
In current period, as the origin of Modern Veterinary Medicine Education inChina, our College will continue to improve our work, take initiative to meet the creative necessity of the States’ science and technology developments. Our college will put forth our excellence in programs, faculty, research, and pedagogy with full effort to lead our disciplines to the national leading position and the world’s advanced level. Ultimately, our college will undertake to become the “First Class research college in veterinary medicine” in China.
